Meet The Label: Swift Avenue Recordings

As we recently mentioned on the blog that this year we hoping to expand our music community reach. By giving music labels a chance to platform their stories and their music here at the realm. This is to give light to what goes behind running a label, some of benefits and also challenges. This insight would be helpful in aiding upcoming label owners and those who aspire to start a music label one day. Also to give a platform for labels to showcase their music in a 30 minute mix. One of the first label we meet this year is one from Pietermaritzburg; South Africa. Everyone meet Swift Avenue Recordings

  1. Greetings & welcome to “Meet Me Underground”, glad you could join us. Can you please introduce yourself & tell us how “Swift Avenue Recordings” was started and by whom?

SAR:  Swift Avenue Recordings was started by Bongisipho Mazibuko and Sikelela Mchunu Originally known as SiQsole and Octavedeep, the representatives behind the Epic Roots Brand. Growing fond of the music scene, we saw another path that could also add value to the culture through networking, meeting other lads with great talent and musical understanding in all walks of life; this inspired us to establish the movement.

  1. Starting a label is no different from starting a business, what was some of your main aims and prospect you had in mind for Swift Avenue and how far are you with them?

SAR:  Internet is the new wave when it comes to operating as a business but most importantly to also showcase good music to the masses with the support of upcoming dope artists, producers and Dj’s. Our Aim as independent label is to create a powerhouse for quality music. Honestly we are far from where we are headed, building a solid foundation is very important when it comes to evolving as a Label; Swift Avenue is moving a good direction.

  1. What makes Swift Avenue underground?

SAR:  The label is diverse when it comes to music, run by youth we like to be relevant, unique and true to the culture.

  1. Does the label have a targeted sound it looks for or it releases anything as long as it’s music?

SAR: if it’s good and compliments the Label’s authenticity, content it is indeed a release. Deep House is the main Target.

  1. The label is more on the digital platforms; will we be seeing you guys cross over to physical releases soon?

SAR: It is always been dreams of ours to one day have music distributed on vinyl’s. The internet is one of the major lucrative tools in terms of reaching to the masses; we barely scratching the surface at the same time touch base with our roots.

  1. One trait you believe upholds the vision of the label/s highly, making it truly different/original?

SAR: Unique, adding a different taste, break boundaries to be on the most creative level but relevant.

  1. Let’s talk about your recent release “Zulu Shoes & Henny”. The release is by whom and what was the inspiration behind the title of the EP and the music on the release?

SAR:  Zulu Shoes & Henny EP is inspired by the old records from the Midnight Eez Hip Hop/Rap Album, two producers from New York City also the legendary ‘Diamonds from Sierra Leone’ hit single produced by the iconic Kanye West. These original songs were Chopped and sampled to create this piece, adding the original deep house  texture for that exclusive feel, taking an international original Hip-hop song and turning it to a House beat, we’re pretty sure they must’ve been sippin on Hennessy  when they created these dope Hip-hop songs, that’s how Zulu Shoes and Henny came about :).

Buy: Epic Roots – Zulu Shoes & Henny EP

  1. Is this the sound wants to take and move forward with it? Or anything that is new and out there is eligible for release under the label?

SAR: Yes; Swift Avenue is all about versatility and exploring into different sounds. Great minds out there are creative and daring.

  1. Half way into 2020 what are some of the labels goals & aims that were set and have you managed to achieve and what can we expect from you guys in the second half of the year?

SAR:  We are proud to have fulfilled our goals and aims this first half; Swift Avenue is not only a label that hosts producers, artists but also focuses on showcasing incredible spinners all round. Second Half year has more to offer as we set to release other dope talents Locally, The capital City of Pietermaritzburg has many creatives that need to share good music on the Swift Avenue Platform spreading the vibes to the world.

Meet The Label: “Underluxe Records”

For our second installment of our new segment “Meet The Label” we are acquainted by Brussels, Belgium based record label Underluxe Records. We get to also know a little more about the brains behind the label and its vision also getting a chance to find out a bit more  about one of the upcoming projects to be released under the label “Road To South Africa” a new single release by co-founder of the label UC Beatz.

Without more being said everyone meet Underluxe.

72362894_2390630450985793_6279843576662720512_n

  • Greetings & welcome to “Meet Me Underground”, glad you could join us. Can you please introduce yourself & tell us how Underluxe Records started and by whom?

Hey! Thank you for having me. I’m UC Beatz, a House producer, DJ and label owner from Brussels, Belgium. I’ve co founded Underluxe Records back in 2011 with my friend Saï aka L’Authenticité with the idea to have a platform to release our music. That’s how and where I released my first EPs. Then through the years other artists joined the roster.

  • The formation or start of a label varies according to vision, aims & hopes of one or more individual concerned. What was something that came to you and inspired you to take the bold step?

From the start with Underluxe we wanted to control all the process to release our music: the choice of the tracks, the master engineer, the artwork, etc. Same for my very own label Entrepôt, I personally supervise every step. I’ve always done things independently. I don’t like someone telling me what to do.

73238661_1158403441011436_6455470209644888064_n

  • Underluxe Records not being the only label you run/own, how is it different to “Underluxe” if it is any different?

Underluxe Records is for digital purposes. It is also a home to release stuff I couldn’t sign somewhere else. It’s a kind of laboratory. But having only immaterial releases was frustrating for a wax lover like me. So back in 2014, I’ve founded my own imprint called Entrepôt Records which focus on vinyl. The particularity of it is that its pressings are limited and it works without distributor. It’s a strictly underground affair. I’m selling my records directly to the customers and to the shops from hand to hand without any intermediate.

  • Could we corner the label/s to a specific genre/sound or in the near future we might find a difference emerging, be it a Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop release coming forth?

With Underluxe Records we don’t focus on one specific genre. Since day one we’ve released Hip-hop and Downtempo aside House Music.

While with Entrepôt Records, I focus 100% on House, more specifically on Deep House.

  • One trait you believe upholds the vision of the label/s highly, making it truly different/original?

Both labels have a common vision: delivering quality underground stuff.

  • Now onto the forthcoming release “Road to South Africa” first off the title of the song, how did it come about?  What’s was the inspiration behind it?

The title of the single was inspired from a dream I’ve made. I was driving through beautiful landscapes in SA and I saw the smiles of the people, the colours of the luxuriant nature and the blue sky while listening to sweet soulful music. It was cool I remembered it as I usually don’t remember my dreams. So when I woke up, I started working on this track trying to put this dream into notes and rhythm.

73395409_405688026768721_5657645889422884864_n

  • Can we take the title in a literal sense or figurative?

Figurative as it comes from a dream’s vision, and literally as I hope soon or later to take that road to visit your wonderful country and play gigs there.

  • Care to run us through the production process behind the song? (Not asking any production secrets lol), the track possessing a mellow vibe to it, embodying soul and groove. What helped you take the direction of your sound?

I’ve always been into soulful since my first release for the simple reason that it is a part of me. I grew up listening to my parent’s record collection which was full of treasures from the Motown golden era. My attraction for this kind of grooves comes from there. About the production process, I had decided to make something less sampled and more played. So I composed, played and recorded the bass line, the rhodes, the synth lead and my vocals.

  • “Road to South Africa” coming at the latter part of the year, is this the labels final release and if not can we expect something before year ends? And did the target set out at the beginning been achieved? Can we expect some more music/events/mixes?

The next and final release for 2019 on Underluxe will arrive in December. As for Entrepôt the next release is scheduled for early 2020. I guess I can say the target was achieved as a label owner, the reaction from the public to the labels releases have been warm and overwhelming. About mixes, I have a podcast serie with my label Entrepôt, called “Entrepôt Cast”. The concept is to invite DJ’s that I like and who cherish the black gold as much as I do.

  • In terms of 2020 what are some of the labels goals & aims?

Becoming more famous than David Guetta and Tiësto together! Lol, no I’m kidding haha. The goal remains the same: delivering quality underground music independently.

  • Where can people send in the demos [If the label is taking any] ?

For Underluxe Records, people can submit their demos to underluxerecords@gmail.com. For Entrepôt Records, I do not take demos.

  • Thank you for being part of our “Meet The Label” segment, where can people get in contact with the label?

People can get in contact with the labels through Facebook.

I also have a website for Entrepôt Records: entrepotrecords.com

Thank you again for having me!

Meet The Label: “Fresh Take Records”

Introducing a new segment here at our realm called “Meet The Label” which is all about meeting and get exposed to new and upcoming underground music labels from all over the world.  We be talking to various owners & heads of some of the greatest music labels about the foundations of creating a music label, the process of their releases and a little on methods that they undergo to run such inspiring warehouses of music. First on our radar we travel to Edinburgh, Scotland to acquaint ourselves with “Fresh Take Records”.
69562852_747334732382942_694482042666090496_n

  1. Greetings & welcome to “Meet Me Underground”, glad you could join us. Can you please introduce yourself & tell us how “Fresh Take” Records started and by whom?

Lee: Thanks for having us! Fresh Take Records is a project from myself (Lee) and Graeme established in 2018. We are based in Edinburgh, Scotland. We originally started out under a different name as a side project during my masters degree. The two of us met through Soundcloud, when I found one of Graeme’s tunes under his TBM alias and wanted to sign it, but it was already snapped up! We began speaking through Facebook and realised we had a lot of similar interests. Graeme had just recently moved to Edinburgh after finishing uni and had good experience of putting on events
in his home of Dundee. During a night where went to see Folamour b2b Dan Shake at Sub Club, we decided to team up and try and take the platform to the next level. Fast forward 6 months, a name change, a release and an event under our belt, and that’s where we are today.

2. Starting a label in these times is quite hard one may presume & is faced by many challenges, what are some of the preparative strategies you (y’all) took?

Lee: Yeah I would definitely agree, it can be tough and there’s a lot of work that goes into it behind the scenes. Although, with the technology available and so much information at our fingertips, I would say it’s definitely more achievable to get started out these days. I think the big challenge is trying to stand out in today’s information overload society. In terms of steps we took, I think we both just try to give anything we commit to 100% and if it doesn’t go our way we try and learn from it.

3. “Fresh Take” not being just a music label but also hosting events is part of the labels notions. How is the House & Disco scene in the UK?

Lee: Early on we both knew we wanted to also put on events as we both DJ and have a passion for sharing music. With our parties we want to centre on bringing a fresh angle, and that means trying to bring people to Edinburgh who have never had a chance before. I think overall the scene is pretty exciting. Glasgow has always been the go to hub for electronic music in Scotland. But I think Edinburgh is really growing as a force.
Venues like Sneaky Pete’s and the Bongo Club are giving a whole bunch of talented emerging nights/promoters the opportunity to put on a wide variety of music and bookings and its definitely moving in the right direction. Some highlights for us are; Athens of the North, WACK, First Edition, Carouse; Soul Jams & Miss World. Also the EH-FM radio station is a good hub for pushing a variety of sounds.

4. Is there any other reason to why the label has focused on these two genres? Or we may be hearing more alternative/experimental music?

Lee: I think this is where our two main interests lie, so expect to see that for the foreseeable under the Fresh Take banner as we try to establish our sound. But we do enjoy a very wide variety of music, so I wouldn’t rule out seeing different types in the future.

5. You recently released the labels first ever official release [VA001]; a various artist compilation with 10 nice tracks, Care to give us a back story to how it came about; the selection process & so forth?

Lee: This was the product of a lot of hard work from; us, the artists, designers and engineers who worked on putting it together. We are both really proud of how it turned out and the response was 100x better than what we had expected. We knew with your first release you only get one chance to make a good impression, so we spent a long time collecting tracks. We were sitting on some for almost 6 months before we were ready to release.

6. Is it coming out on physical formats?

Lee: No plans for physical at the minute (mainly due to the cost) but we are hopefully planning to get our first physical release next year.

7. In the previous year (2018) there was “Fresh Take Advent” also with a number of various tracks from a range of different producers; what is the labels secret to finding such talent & music?

Lee:  I would say it mostly comes down to a lot of Soundcloud listening, there’s so much talent out there if you dig a bit. We try to listen to every demo we get sent and always let people know if it’s what we are after. Similarly, we often approach people we think are consistent and ask for them to send us some stuff and try and work it out that way.

8. The year almost over did you the target set out at the beginning been achieved? Can we expect some more music/events/mixes?

Lee: I think both of us are pretty happy with the progress we have made in such a short time. However, I would say the good thing about us as a team is we don’t like to get too comfy. So yes, we have at least 2 more secrets planned for before the year is out – all things going to plan. And the guest mix is now bi-weekly so look out for regular content from that.

9. Will you be sharing the “Fresh Take” experience in terms of events other parts of the world?

Lee: We’d love too. From our analytics we can see we have a very international audience. It would be nice to maybe collaborate with some other labels in other parts of the world that we are friendly with and put on some memorable nights.

10. In terms of 2020 what are some of the labels goals & aims?

Lee: This year was all about compilations to establish ourselves. Next year we want to focus on releasing more individual projects and we have a few already in the pipeline. Also, a lot more events, we already have some foundation plans in place for that as well.

11. Where can people send in the demos [If the label is taking any]

Lee: We are always on the lookout for new talent: freshtakerecordsinfo@gmail.com

12. Thank you for being part of our “Meet The Label” segment, where can people get in contact with the label?

New Super Black Music: “I’m Not Sure What This IS About”

Aryu Jassika

Super Black Tapes has come through with yet another super banging releases. “I’m Not Sure What This Is About” by South African music producer Aryu Jassika is a much more different approach to the ever so loved sound of Gqom music. One may ask isn’t this hard techno? Others may say its minimal house music and some may conclude this is Future Gqom. Well it matters not , it’s just music and interpretations of it will always be different.

The title on it’s own leaves you questioning yourself a bit but with just two tracks you its impact on you is instance. “Ja Exse”  greets with a heavy thumping tech kick side plated with a snare type of sound which seems to have a mind of its own floating in the middle of it all phasing in and out of a cut off reverberated state with its pitch fluctuating from high to low as it works cohesively with all the additional elements warm pads, synths and stabs. Which grow with the suspense of the track. This one is really bound to get you moving and dancing to it. It is followed by  “Coughing” which keeps theme, with its broken type of kick pattern it also gives a alternative thought to what Gqom music is but more so what Gqom music can be. Entirely it carries a outer space vibe feeling hazy and more trance like, hypnotic if you listen to it in a unaware state.

On “I’m Not Sure What This Is About”  you can fall in love with it quickly or let it grow on you the more you listen to it. Though if you are House music lover you are bound to find something to your liking between the two.

PICK OF THE WEEK: “New York Grind” by Kareem Ali

Our favourite pick for the week goes to New York music producer & CosmoFlux Recordings label boss Kareem Ali with his four track EP titled “New York Grind”. Themed on nothing but hustling, the EP really gets you in a hustling mood with its upbeat tracks which will sure get you moving & dancing to wherever you need to be.

First on the EP is “Hustle” with its classic club track like groove. It comes in with its hard kicks , open & closed hats, with a vintage piano or organ type of  loop which is quite trancy might I add. It reminds you of that Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers type of jam. Though it remains authentic to its own make. The vocal work and vocal slices really give the song extensive colour & true rawness making it more awesome. Reminding you that this is New York and you gotta grind & go get that. Second on the release is Daily Struggles (Liv.e – Phunkintro [Mndsgn Remix] House Edit) really one for the books a house edit of Mndsgn’s remix of of Liv.e Phunkintro. Kareem brings this one to a whole new level flipping this funky gem into a groove machine , he also throws in his trumpet just spice it up!. You actually end up forgetting about daily struggles if you know what I’m saying as this one will put you in a world of its own.

The last two pieces ease you into a state of relaxation of deepness some may add Night Shift Noir & Rising (Outro)  closing off the grind with a mellow feel with one being a total ambient take with beautiful harmonies and intergalactic sounds.

& as statement from Kareem himself the release will also be available Vinyl next year 2020.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Billy Cobham Feat. Novecento – Drum’N Voice Remixed (Part 2) REB120B

REB120B.jpg

We are honored and excited to present the album ‘Drum’n Voice Remixed’ by the legend Billy Cobham in collaboration with Italian’s finest music producers and composers Novecento. Acclaimed as jazz-rock fusion’s greatest drummer, Billy Cobham has dedicated his whole life to musical exploration and creative expression. Throughout his career he has collaborated with artists like Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Airto Moreira, George Benson and appeared on over 300 recordings, including icons like Peter Gabriel, Quincy Jones, Jack Bruce, Bob Weir, and James Brown. The first album ‘Spectrum’ is a masterpiece and still considered a reference album today. ‘Drum’N Voice’ is a collaborative project with the Nicolosi family, known collectively as Novecento. After reaching the top of the European and American charts with their Italo Disco hits,
they decided to explore new ideas and evolve their music leading to a jazz and ambient territory.
‘The Vibe Inside’ is a fresh and captivating song that features the beautiful voice of Dora Nicolosi (the real voice of Valerie Dore) and Eumir Deodato at the rhodes. A very strong combination between Billy Cobham’s jazz sounds with the Italo disco flavour. The release boasts two really powerful remixes from Gerd Janson and Emanuel Satie.
Gerd, always an admirer of the italo sound, pulls us in with his typical vibe, mixing the vocals with a powerful piano riff, an acid bassline that does not come out of the head, while Emanuel, follows the amazing ‘Don’t Forget To Go Home’ (produced with Billy Cobham in 2018), giving us another massive track destined to ignite this summer dancefloors. Finally, to close the release, Craig Bratley produces a beautiful and elegant downtempo version of ‘One More Day To Live’.
A limited double vinyl will be released at the end of September, that will also include some other incredible remixes of the songs of the album.

1) Billy Cobham Feat. Novecento ‘The Vibe Inside’ (Gerd Janson Acid Dub)
2) Billy Cobham Feat. Novecento ‘The Vibe Inside’ (Emanuel Satie Remix)
3) Billy Cobham Feat. Novecento ‘The Vibe Inside’ (Nicolosi Mix)
4) Billy Cobham Feat. Novecento ‘One More Day To Live’ (Craig Bratley Remix)

ABE M BEATS – Homegrown Vol.001 [Review]

By Nkululeko S Dube

Lasting for a mere 27 minutes, the first volume of Homegrown Vol.001 by Abe M Beats can be summed up as a sweet trip into what one can call beat bliss. If you like kicking back and unwinding to Lo-Fi/Hip Hop instrumentals, then without doubt Homegrown is just for you. It feels more like an experimental project then your everyday beat tape. Each track having its own distinctive feel & taste, which brings immense color to the ear drums & entire experience. Opening with “wWelcome” which comes in with heavy emphasis to it, hard knocks carrying a sweet mellow sample laid on a sort of distorting grudge/crunchy bass, really sets the mood as you bout to explore more into the tape. “Wet Feet” following up with some great aura to it, you will have nature type of sounds running around in the back of your head but still be in sync with all the other elements of the tune. Other stand out picks is “Rooster” / “NIYAKE s.2 no.11” which both carry different personalities. “Rooster” feels like some dark alley way showdown soundtrack. “NIYAKE s.2 no.11” coming with a classic jungle break beat, giving off a groove type of vibe of some retro funk/soul which will leave your nostalgic for more. Both “TRASH BEATS” are gems, totally going against their title. Instantly ones to easily fall in love with, being drawn in by the piano & the beautiful flute with a dash of faint old rugged drum hits on 001 or be caught up with in the glitch growling bassline from 002, its really up to your choosing. The entire beat tape is more of an experimental gift, really listenable for a lover to a first timer or a general lover of music.
