ABE M BEATS – Homegrown Vol.001 [Review]

By Nkululeko S Dube

Lasting for a mere 27 minutes, the first volume of Homegrown Vol.001 by Abe M Beats can be summed up as a sweet trip into what one can call beat bliss. If you like kicking back and unwinding to Lo-Fi/Hip Hop instrumentals, then without doubt Homegrown is just for you. It feels more like an experimental project then your everyday beat tape. Each track having its own distinctive feel & taste, which brings immense color to the ear drums & entire experience. Opening with “wWelcome” which comes in with heavy emphasis to it, hard knocks carrying a sweet mellow sample laid on a sort of distorting grudge/crunchy bass, really sets the mood as you bout to explore more into the tape. “Wet Feet” following up with some great aura to it, you will have nature type of sounds running around in the back of your head but still be in sync with all the other elements of the tune. Other stand out picks is “Rooster” / “NIYAKE s.2 no.11” which both carry different personalities. “Rooster” feels like some dark alley way showdown soundtrack. “NIYAKE s.2 no.11” coming with a classic jungle break beat, giving off a groove type of vibe of some retro funk/soul which will leave your nostalgic for more. Both “TRASH BEATS” are gems, totally going against their title. Instantly ones to easily fall in love with, being drawn in by the piano & the beautiful flute with a dash of faint old rugged drum hits on 001 or be caught up with in the glitch growling bassline from 002, its really up to your choosing. The entire beat tape is more of an experimental gift, really listenable for a lover to a first timer or a general lover of music.
